Get Ready for Olive Knits 4th Annual 4-Day KAL!

We are excited to announce that Northfield Yarn is participating in Olive Knits’ 4th Annual 4-Day KAL! Each summer, designer and author Marie Greene of Olive Knits invites knitters to join her in making a sweater more quickly than they thought possible. Read her 2019 blog post about the history of the KAL for more information!

This year, Marie has designed a brand-new, unisex sweater pattern that will be released on June 15. The KAL kicks off on July 1. We will slowly be sharing details about the KAL over the next month. First up: our yarn picks and swatches for Marie’s top-secret design!

Our Yarn Picks

Northfield Yarn has selected four DK-weight yarns, each a bit different in texture and fiber content, that we think will make wonderful sweaters.

Arranmore Light by the Fibre Co. (80% Wool, 10% Cashmere, 10% Silk); 328 yards/100 grams

This tweedy, luxurious yarn will knit up into a warm and classic sweater. Swatch shown in Glenveagh Castle (main color) and Meara (contrast color).

Luma by the Fibre Co. (50% Merino, 25% Cotton, 15% Linen, 10% Silk) ; 137 yards/50 grams

This soft, luminous yarn is certified organic and makes a great all-season garment. Swatch shown in Blue Dusk (main color) and Shadow (contrast color).

Sueño by HiKoo (80% Merino, 20% Rayon from Bamboo); 255 yards/100 grams

This smooth, machine-washable yarn has excellent stitch definition and drape.  Swatch shown in Plum (main color) and Grey Heather (contrast color).

Sylvan Spirit by Green Mountain Spinnery (50% Wool, 50% Tencel); 180 yards/57 grams

This delightfully sheepy, single-ply yarn is lightweight and lofty. Swatch shown in Sterling (main color) and Agate (contrast color).

“Rift” Marl-Along with Mojave by Kelbourne Woolens

We are so excited to join Kelbourne Woolens and designer Jacqueline Cieslak to host a Rift sweater knit-along featuring one of the newest yarns in our shop, Mojave. This KAL features a simple, easy-to-knit sweater with a creative twist: two colors of Mojave are marled together to create a quick project that is all your own.

Our Suggestions for Marled Color Combinations

We knitted up swatches using the colors of Mojave that we have in stock at the shop, which are a bit different than the swatches that Kelbourne Woolens created. We encourage you to create your own combinations, too! Check out Kelbourne Woolens’ blog post about swatching for Rift using two colors of Mojave held together for tips.

We have two neutral colors in stock, Natural and Smoke Grey, that can be paired with any of our bright colors to give a more toned-down effect. We especially recommend Smoke Gray paired with Raspberry and Natural paired with Seafoam Green. Both Smoke Gray and Natural would also pair beautifully with Sky Blue.

Choosing a Size for Your Marled Rift Sweater

Rift is designed for a finished bust measurement of 40 (44, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64, 68, 72) inches. To choose your size, measure the circumference around the fullest part of your bust, then add 6-12” (depending on how much ease you want) and choose the closest size. Please see schematic for more detailed finished measurements.

Kelbourne Woolens has organized the sizes into four groups corresponding with the following finished bust sizes and yarn requirements:

• XS / 3 skeins per color / 40″

• S / 4 skeins per color / 44, 48, 52″

• M / 5 skeins per color / 56, 60, 64″

• L / 6 skeins per color / 68, 72″
