This class will introduce you to some basic Tunisian Crochet stitches as we work through Aoibhe Ni’s pattern for the “Phoenix Hat.” This lovely, slouchy hat is worked flat and has a very subtle stitch pattern created with just the Tunisian Simple Stitch combined with Tunisian increases and decreases. You’ll learn these basic stitches, how to read Aiobhe’s charts, how track of your progress, and how to identify and correct mistakes. The hat is worked flat, then stitched and gathered. You don’t even need Tunisian hooks, if you have regular crochet hooks with a long enough body to accommodate 12-15 stitches.

Skill Level: Participants do not need prior experience with Tunisian Crochet, but must know how to 1) create a slip knot, and 2) create a crochet chain of specified length.

Supplies to bring to class:
(registered students receive 10% off class supply purchases, excluding patterns)

  • The “Phoenix Hat” pattern by Aoibhe Ni (Ravelry link)
  • 420 yards of sock weight yarn; a single color will show the stitch pattern best
  • Crochet hooks in sizes F/6 (3mm) and H/8 (5mm) — NOTE: These do not need to be Tunisian hooks. You can use regular crochet hooks, as long as the main body of the hook can accommodate 12-15 stitches at the specified diameter (no thumb bump or grip in the way).
  • 1.5” (3.5cm) button to hide gathers at the top of the hat
  • Notions: stitch markers, yarn needle
