VIOLET PROTEST

The Violet Protest is the brain-child of artist Ann Morton. She envisions it as a nation-wide, non-partisan effort to send 50 hand-made textile squares to each member of the 2021 Congress in support of the following core American values:

  • Civility & Respect
  • Citizenship
  • Compromise
  • Country over Party & Corporate Influence
  • Courage
  • Candor
  • Compassion
  • Creativity

That’s a total of 26,750 squares!

The Violet Protest squares are to be 8″ x 8″ in size, made using equal amounts of red and blue fiber, so that the overall impression is a violet color. In this way, the colors red and blue, which have long been associated with political division in our country, will come together to produce a visual metaphor for Unity.

Northfield Yarn has signed up to create at least 25 squares, and YOU are invited to help us reach that goal (or exceed it). This is a FREE event, but we’d love to have a general idea of how many of you would like to participate, we’ve created a event listing so you can easily sign up to join our effort!

We’ll be working on our squares during Thursday and Saturday Open Stitch sessions between March 12-28. Specifications for the squares and pattern suggestions for knit or crocheted squares will be available in the shop. Bring red and blue yarn from your stash and join us during any Open Stitch! You can also sew, quilt, or weave the squares.

Before heading off to Washington D.C., finished squares will be on display at the Phoenix Art Museum. It is Ann Morton’s hope that all 50 states will be represented by the makers. You can see an artist’s rendering of how the squares will be displayed, as well as more information about the project and the project progress on The Violet Protest Web site.

Any questions? Get in touch with Jody — Admin@NorthfieldYarn.com

If you’d like to help spread the word about the Violet Protest, you can download an informational flyer to post about the project. Individuals can also sign up to submit a certain number of squares, but please help us meet our organizational goal, too!

Stop by the shop to make an aromatherapy sachet, vote in our holiday ornament contest, sample a delicious No Chewing Allowed truffle (and perhaps purchase a truffle gift box!), and cheer on the shop manager as she rashly attempts to knit a sweater in just four hours.
